Surf Fishing

Surf Fishing

Surf fishing is a popular outdoor activity in North Carolina, and the Cape Lookout National Seashore is an excellent fishing destination. The limited access to Core and Shackleford Banks provides plenty of open beach to setup surf fishing rigs. In fact, the only places that might hold more than a few fisherman are around the Rock Jetty and at Cape Point on the tip of the outer banks.

For information about fishing regulations, seasons, size limits and licensing requirements, please visit the North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries.

Gear and Bait

Bait and a limited selection of fishing tackle is available at the Calico Jack's shipstore. Several stores on Harkers have a much broader tackle selection: Harkers Island Tackle and Billy's Grocery.

A Saltwater Fishing License is Required

As of Jan. 1, 2007, any person 16 and older who wants to fish recreationally in any water designated as coastal and joint waters of North Carolina must purchase a Coastal Recreational Fishing License (CRFL).

Licenses can be purchased online at the NC Wildlife Website. Use the previous link and then select "Online Services" on the menu bar. In the License section, select the entry for fishing licenses. Start the registration process, and purchase a Coastal Recreational Fishing License (CRFL).

Note: Calico Jack's does NOT sell fishing licenses, but one can be purchased at the tackle stores previously mentioned.
