Whelk Shell

Shelling

Cape Lookout is known for some of the finest shelling on the east coast. Large whelk shells are commonly found on the west beach at Cape Point south of the Lighthouse. The best shelling time is about 2 hours before or after low tide, and is often excellent after large storms.

Note: The National Park Service limits each person to 2 gallons of uninhabited shells per day. Live shells should be left in their natural habitat. For more information, visit the Mollusks page on the National Park Service website.
